2023 Europe Tobacco Industry Interference Index
Monday, 13 November 2023
On 14 November 2023, the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) released the 2023 Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index.
The SmokeFree Partnership, together with Corporate Europe Observatory and GGTC, worked on the European Index and the results are worrisome as no country is immune to influence from the tobacco industry.
The Index, published every two years, measures how well governments worldwide respond to tobacco industry interference and protect their public health policies from commercial and vested interests. The goal of the Index is to call on governments to ensure better implementation of Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
9 countries in Europe (UK, Poland, Israel, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Georgia, Germany, Spain, and Romania) deteriorated in their scores compared to 2021, while 6 (Ukraine, Italy, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, and France) improved.
Ukraine improved its score by 20 points compared to 2021 and is the best-performing country globally.
