Harnessing tobacco control’s contributions to a greener economy - brainstorming lab at the European Development Days

Wednesday, 09 June 2021

The Framework Convention Alliance and the Smoke Free Partnership will be co-hosting a brainstorming lab session at the upcoming European Development Days on 15 June at 16:00 CET.

Tobacco has a significant negative impact on sustainable development and the pursuit of a greener economy. Not only does this include health and poverty, but tobacco consumption and production also lead to deforestation, land degradation, and water contamination. As such, global tobacco control has an important role to play in realizing a greener future. The brainstorming lab will allow participants to discuss how to best harness its potential and where to focus our efforts. A description on the lab is available on the EDD website here.

The session will bring together participants from the development, sustainability and tobacco control communities for an interactive discussion. After a brief introduction on the core aspects of tobacco control, participants will work together in small virtual groups on 4 different subjects:

  • How to promote awareness on climate change & human rights in tobacco control?
  • How to offset tobacco products’ impact on the environment?
  • How to promote sustainable livelihoods & agricultural practices?
  • How to encourage cross-sectorial civil society partnership on tobacco control?

The group discussions will help identify recommendations on the role of tobacco control in European development policies for environmental and sustainability projects.

Please note that the session can host 40 people maximum in order to encourage active participation in the discussion with people from different backgrounds. Registration will therefore be on a first come first served basis. You can register for the entire conference here and then register for the specific brainstorming lab here. Registration is free for the entire conference. Please note that registration for the brainstorming labs is only open from June 8 to June 11.
