SFP is looking for its new Director

The Smoke Free Partnership (SFP) was created in order to advocate at EU and national level for the implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. For a decade and a half, it provided a key voice in public health in Europe, advocating for the adoption of policies and legislation to help reduce tobacco use.
Our vision is of a world where children can grow up free from the devastating effects of tobacco use. To achieve that vision, we advocate for policy change and we work collaboratively with civil society organisations, researchers, policy makers, to raise awareness and drive policy change.
Since its creation in 2006, SFP has helped lead campaigns on a number of important EU tobacco control policy areas, including smoke-free policies, the EU Tobacco Tax Directive, FCTC Article 5.3 Guidelines, FCTC Article 6 Guidelines, and the revised Tobacco Products Directive. The World Health Organisation recognised the SFP for its tobacco control work by awarding it a World No Tobacco Day Award in 2011. SFP was also awarded the 2015 Luther L. Terry Award for outstanding global achievement and exemplary leadership in Tobacco Control.
Since 2014, SFP works closely with a Coalition of over 50 tobacco control and public health organisations from all over the European region, supporting each other in efforts to advance tobacco control through advocacy. SFP and the Coalition provides an important counterweight to tobacco industry lobby at European level.

The SFP Director’s role
The SFP Director will be one of the most visible and consequential positions in the European and global tobacco control community. The Director will lead a small but dynamic and highly qualified team in making a difference for public health, working with a Board of experts and leaders and a Coalition of outstanding and committed public health advocates. This position offers ample opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and networks.
Strategic leadership of SFP: the Director is the public face of the organisation and its main representative.
- Representation and policy leadership
- Develop visible and impactful advocacy for SFP in the EU institutions and other relevant European bodies;
- Maintain and develop SFP’s network of contacts within the EU institutions, the SFP coalition, the global tobacco control community, media and other stakeholders
- Represent SFP and widely communicate its vision on tobacco control to policy makers at international, European and national level
- Maintain contacts with international networks in the fields of tobacco control, and government bodies on national, European and global level;
- Lead SFP’s engagement with allies, stakeholders, and audiences
- Keep the SFP Board informed of relevant EU developments
- Prepare in collaboration with the SFP staff, Board and experts as appropriate, responses for submission to the EU and encourage new policy proposals.
- Organisation leadership
- Lead the SFP and the broader Community of coalition members and partners towards achieving the policy objectives through effective advocacy strategies and campaigns
- Maintain close contacts with the SFP Coalition members (Main partners, Associate partners and Advocacy partners) to ensure the best knowledge of current opportunities, challenges and developments in tobacco control;
- Workplan, team and financial management
- Prepare strategic and annual workplans and budgets
- Develop and implement fundraising strategies, including grants, tenders, contracts, budgets and projects and other fundraising initiatives
- Lead on the prioritisation and allocation of time and resources towards SFP’s policy objectives
- Lead and supervise the recruitment, contracting, management and appraisal of permanent and temporary SFP staff members;
- Oversees the financial management in collaboration with the Treasurer and finance manager
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- University degree.
- At least 10 years professional experience in the (EU) health policy environment, with organisational, project and/or team leadership highly desirable;
- Thoroughly acquainted with EU institutions, NGOs and advocacy organisations, with a proven network
- Experience in fundraising and in developing and managing publicly (EU-) funded programmes
- Strategic thinker
- Knowledge of tobacco control highly desirable
- Fluent spoken and written English (native speaker or equivalent); working level of French highly desirable; other European languages would be an asset
- Commitment to the SFP values, mission and vision
- Excellent communication, diplomatic, networking and representational skills
- Interpersonal skills and desire to nurture SFP’s small and tight-knit team as well as its dedicated community of coalition members
- Strong sense of fairness, diplomacy.
- Ability to negotiate and lead consensus between various positions
- Ability to function and lead others under pressure and maintain a positive outlook.
