SFP response to EC Roadmap on 'Alcohol & tobacco bought abroad – review of tax rules'

Thursday, 14 January 2021

The European Commission roadmap focused on updating the rules for tobacco and alcohol bought abroad and improving the misuse of existing cross-border arrangements for such purchases.

SFP provided a response to the roadmap, outlining the organisation's main priorities on the issue:

  • An upward convergence of prices across the European Union would reduce cross-border tobacco products purchasing and improve public health, by contributing to decrease in tobacco consumption.
  • Lowering the guide level to 200 cigarettes and 150g of smoking tobacco would reduce tobacco cross-border shopping.
  •  In addition, we support the principles invoked by the alcohol control community, which are equally applicable in the case of tobacco cross-border shopping.
