JOB DESCRIPTION: SFP COMMUNICATIONS & POLICY INTERN
(5-6 months position, ideally starting from the end of September 2022/beginning of October 2022)
WHO WE ARE
The Smoke Free Partnership (SFP) is a coalition of more than 50 NGOs working exclusively on EU policy analysis and advocacy linked to the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Our vision is a world free from the death and suffering caused by tobacco consumption. SFP works with decision-makers to ensure that tobacco control is prioritized at the EU level and to promote tobacco control policy change.
SUMMARY OF THIS FUNCTION
The SFP Communications and Policy Intern supports the implementation of the SFP priorities in different areas. S/he will work closely with the SFP policy team. S/he will have a responsibility to support the development and implementation of various activities on issues such as (but not limited to): tobacco taxation, tobacco environmental mitigation, tobacco industry interference, the fight against illicit tobacco trade, tobacco advertising, smoke-free policies, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and cancer prevention.

This would notably suit a person willing to take responsibility, at ease with multitasking, and eager to help expand the visibility of a committed NGO. Intermediate graphic design skills would be a significant plus.
By the end of the internship, the intern will be expected to understand the EU institutional landscape on priority issues, have practical experience in drafting policy and comms content (policy briefings, press releases, social media posts, newsletter, etc.), as well as sound knowledge of the EU policy-making processes. The desired applicant must demonstrate integrity, professional behavior, proactivity, and an ability to learn on the go and work in a small, multicultural, supportive team.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Policy on tobacco control
- Monitor the policy developments in relation to the priority legislative files for SFP at the EU and national level
- Research and summarize key arguments, support the drafting of policy content on tobacco control, environment, NCD policies
- Attend meetings (in-person or virtual), webinars, and events on policy issues of interest to SFP
Communications and SFP Coalition management
- Support the drafting of communication material across policy areas (media statements, press releases, quotes, news)
- Support with SFP Coalition work (e.g., drafting of internal communication updates for the SFP Coalition email update and newsletter)
- Take minutes of meetings
Event organisation
- Support the organisation and logistics of SFP events (e.g., the SFP policy events and Annual Coalition meeting)
- Draft short reports of calls and meetings
- Ensure the prompt follow-up for events and meetings
Other
- Carry out other tasks as requested by the SFP Director
- Work with SFP staff to support the general administration of SFP
EDUCATION
- Undergraduate or postgraduate in a related field (e.g., politics, communications, public relations, international relations)
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Understanding of EU institutions and processes
- Ability to synthesize and analyse policy issues
- Ability to prioritize and organize own work in cooperation with the Director and the team
- Excellent writing skills in English
- French-speaking skills would be a plus
- Knowledge of Mailchimp, Canva (or other visual editing software) would be an advantage.
- Fluency in MS Office and Google applications
