Inside Big Tobacco’s EU Lobbying Budget - 2023 Data
Monday, 23 June 2025
The 2024 edition of the infographic on the presence of the tobacco industry in the EU policy-making environment, based on 2023 data, has been released!
Tobacco industry interference remains the biggest obstacle to the implementation of effective tobacco control policies worldwide. When such interference leads to delays or blocks progress, it puts lives at greater risk of illness and death.
SFP has been monitoring the EU Transparency Register to identify and assess how tobacco industry interests are represented. The goal is to shed light on the financial and human resources that the tobacco industry and its allies dedicate to influencing EU institutions.
This year’s infographic focuses on four key areas of tobacco industry lobbying:
-
direct lobbying expenses
-
consultancy fees
-
staff
-
accreditations to the European Parliament
It is important to note that these figures are a conservative estimate. Since the EU Transparency Register is voluntary, the data does not fully capture the extent of the industry’s lobbying activities.
