European Court of Justice

The Court of Justice of the European Communities, located in Luxemburg, is made up of one judge from each EU country. The Court is assisted by eight advocates-general whose role is to present reasoned opinions on the cases brought before the Court. The Court’s role is to ensure that EU law is complied with, and that all Treaties are correctly interpreted and applied. The Court also makes sure that EU member states and institutions do what the law requires. It also has the power to settle legal dispute between EU member states, EU institutions, businesses and individuals.
